Hi, I’m Ben Kvanli.

The Inspiring Journey of the non-profit that your tours fund:

The Red River Race Team, founded in 1994, has left an indelible mark on the world of kayaking and outdoor adventure. Let’s delve into their remarkable story:

1.      Origins and Olympic Connections: The team’s inception was fueled by the passion of its founder, Ben Kvanli, who himself competed in the 1996 Olympic Games in kayaking. Alongside fellow athlete and coach Mark Poindexter, they played a pivotal role in establishing the USA Canoe/Kayak Jr. Olympic program.

2.      Adam Sanders and the Healing Waters: Adam Sanders, one of the team’s early participants in Texas, demonstrated the transformative power of the San Marcos Springs. Despite having brittle bone disease, he discovered that kayaking allowed him to keep up with other kids safely. His experience inspired further exploration of opportunities for unique individuals.

3.      Wounded Vets and Freedom on the Water: In 2002, the team embarked on a mission to introduce wounded veterans to kayaking. The freedom of being on an even playing field electrified these veterans, motivating the team to seek more ways to enhance lives through water-based activities.

4.      Building a Whitewater Course: The team’s commitment extended to building a whitewater course on the San Marcos Springs. Collaborating with champions like Scott Shipley, Rebecca Ybarra Ramirez, and others, they created a space for exhilarating paddling experiences.

5.      Team River Runner Partnership: Team River Runner joined forces with the Red River Race Team, working with wounded warriors. Joe Mornini’s visits to paddle with them at Fort Sam Houston and the Center for the Intrepid further strengthened this partnership.

6.      Teaching Paddling Skills: The team’s impact extends beyond their own ranks. They’ve led kayak trips, events, and classes for VA hospitals across Texas, teaching over 50,000 people to paddle with stability and style.

7.      Athletic Achievements: Our dedication has borne fruit. Paddlers from their team consistently make the US National Team, and athletes like Andy Soule—who trained daily in San Marcos—achieved remarkable success, including a bronze medal in the 2010 Paralympics. Kelly Allen and Jillian Elwart started racing with us and represent the US Team at the Rio and Paris Paralympics as well.

8.      Inclusion and Excellence: We want to make the river more accessible. So everyone can cool off in this great sport. Our motto remains clear: “Come be a part of the team, and you will see why we paddle every day.” 🚣‍♂️💪
